Portal is a first-person puzzle-platform game series developed and published by Valve Corporation. Set in the Half-Life universe, the games center around a woman named Chell, who is forced to undergo a series of tests in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center by the malicious artificial intelligence that controls the facility, GlaDOS. Each test revolves around using the "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device" - the "portal gun" - that can shoot blue and orange human-sized portals between flat surfaces. Chell's momentum will remain the same while going though the portals, allowing her to "fling" herself across wide gaps or high in the air. Other mechanics such as lasers, light bridges, tractor funnels, various types of Cubes (including the Companion Cube), and turrets, small robots that shoot at Chell on sight, can aid or hinder the goal to reach the exit of each level. In Portal 2, new mechanics were added: blue gel that can reflect and bounce the player high in the air, and orange gel which reduces friction, increasing speed. The sequel also explores the history of Aperture Science, as Chell completes more tests in a rundown Aperture facility, with the help of Wheatley, a personality core robot with a British accent.
