It is based on the 2004 novel of the same title by John Ajvide Lindqvist, who also wrote the screenplay. The film tells the story of Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), a sensitive, bullied 12-year-old boy living with his mother in suburban Sweden, When he meets his new neighbor, the mysterious and moody Eli (Lina Leandersson), they strike up a friendship. Initially reserved with each other, Oskar and Eli slowly form a close bond, but it soon it is soon revealed that she is no ordinary young girl, and she is instead a vampire. Eventually, Eli shares her dark, macabre secret with Oskar, revealing her connection to a string of bloody local murders. Alfredson decided to tone down many elements of the novel and focus primarily on the relationship between the two main characters.
