Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2015 American erotic romantic drama film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, produced by Michael De Luca Productions and Trigger Street Productions, and distributed by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. It is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by British author E. L. James. The movie follows college senior Anastasia "Ana" Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, when steps in for her sick roommate to interview prominent businessman Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan, for their campus paper, hardly realizing the path her life will take. Christian, as enigmatic as he is rich and powerful, finds himself apparently "strangely" drawn to Anastasia, and she to him. Though sexually inexperienced, Anastasia plunges headlong into an affair, signing a contract that essentially makes her Christian's sex slave, and learns that his secret sexual proclivities "push the boundaries of pain and pleasure". It is the first film in the Fifty Shades film series, while Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are scheduled to be released in February 10, 2017, and February 9, 2018, respectively.
