Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a 1998 American black comedy road film adapted from Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name. It was directed by Terry Gilliam, produced by Rhino Films and Summit Entertainment, and distributed by Universal Pictures. In it, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Duke begins to drive back to L.A., but after an odd run-in with a cop (Gary Busey), he returns to Sin City and continues his wild drug binge. Despite being a box office failure, grossing $10.6 million at the box office (well below its $18.5 million budget), it has since become a cult film, due to in large part to its release on DVD, including a Special Edition released by The Criterion Collection.
